Any Halloween traditionalists?

it seems like it would be a lot harder due to size

  1. Yes. We switched to pumpkins for some very good reasons. Turnips are smaller and harder to cut shapes into.

  2. I see this as a fun fact in a lot of Halloween trivia… I’m not going to try it. I already risk my fingers on pumpkins, turnips are way smaller and worse.

  3. I did it one year (2020, so I was doing a lot of weird crafty shit and was having trouble getting through my CSA boxes). It was terrifying! Like a little devilish imp on my table.

  4. Never seen it done, but people paint and carve all kinds of gourds other than the traditional orange pumpkins at times.

  5. The major advantage of a pumpkin is that they are hollow for the o’lantern part
On the other hand, you can carve a turnip in 3 dimensions and get some really creepy skulls.

  6. Word of advice from someone from that side of the world, use powertools as much as possible if you’re thinking of carving a neep next year. Saves your fingers (although the blood stains might add to authenticity).

Most folk over here would go for a pumpkin these days though. It’s a shame, I much prefer the smell of turnips if nothing else.

  7. Is it really a lantern if you can’t hollow them out and put a light inside? More of a turnip carving, if anything.
