I was talking to someone the other day online, and he generally never heard of them. I thought they were a world wide thing.

  1. Is that the one where you open a new ‘window’ on each day of december and get a piece of candy? i haven’t seen those since the 90s!

  2. I get them sometimes! My favorite one I ever got was a dnd dice one from Etsy. They are sold in the US, but I don’t think the majority of people get them.

  3. we did it when the kids were small. I haven’t put up an advent calendar in about 15 years.

  4. Yes. There are many different kinds too. Some with gifts, some just as decoration.

  5. I grew up Catholic, so it’s a huge thing in my family. I get the beer Advent calendar from Aldi every year for myself. I remember this Lego one I got back as a kid being really fun.

  6. Some do, some don’t.

My family never did them, but my wife’s always does.

Prior to my first Christmas with her I had seen pre-made ones in stores and such but I’m not sure I would have recognized the name “advent calendar” without a description.

  7. Yes, they are common. You can see them sold in virtually any store that sells holiday items. I’m not sure why the person you spoke with never heard of them. Even someone who doesn’t have one should have heard of them. Maybe he wasn’t familiar with calling it an advent calendar. But yes, we have them.

  8. We got them for our kids when they were young, but our youngest is now 42, so I guess it’s been 30 years since we last bought one.

  9. The first time we had an advent calendar was when I was a kid and some family friends who were from Germany (and were temporarily living in the US) gave us one.

  10. I used to do the little chocolate ones when I was a kid but I stopped once I got older. We still do them every year though for the kids in my extended family.

That said, I know there are a lot of ‘adult’ advent calendars out there these days for older people if they still want to do them. Mini bottles of wine/beer, beauty products, etc. And some people still do the chocolate ones at any age.

Oh! And a year or two ago my sister gave me an advent calendar of mini Harry Potter FunkoPops because she got a crazy deal on it. That one was actually a lot of fun.

  11. Yep! We had them with chocolate every year. Already got them for this year, too!

  12. Yes, I had them growing up. You can buy them in any supermarket during the Christmas season.

The first one I had just had Bible verses, but there were others that had chocolate in them.

  13. My partner and I get one – last year was wines, the year before was jams, one was different weird candy.

  14. Grew up lutheran, advent is a whole thing. Wreaths, calendars, candles, special services, etc

  15. My husband has always brought one home for my kids. We attempted to not do so last year as they were 15 and 13 at the time, but they insisted they still wanted one. I myself never had them as a kid.

  16. They’re not unheard of, but it’s definitely a family by family basis.

My family didn’t do them and as such I didn’t even know what an advent calendar was until I was in my 20s

  17. It seems weird that the other person had never heard of them. They’re very common and can be found in all kinds of stores once the holidays roll around.

  18. No, not the ones with a chocolate or treat every day. I’m Catholic & advent is meant to be a penitential season- we save the treats for Christmas.

  19. When my kids were little they each got one they had little chocolates in it.

    We don’t get them anymore.

  20. I did as a kid, but my Mom’s German and Catholic. I don’t think any of my friends did, though.

  21. They’re fairly common. I’ve bought the cheese calendar from Aldi before, and for this year my wife bought us an “escape room” calendar where every day is a different riddle to solve.

  22. Yes, I love them! I’ve usually done the traditional one-piece-of-chocolate ones, but sometimes I like to branch out to more interesting things. This year I have a hot chocolate one and a jam one!

  23. Some people do some don’t. I just got a funko one for my son for this year because he loves funko pops.

  24. I’ve seen them, but only in relation to counting down gifts. Is Advent a religious thing or marketing thing? Like would it be offensive to have a Halloween Advent Calendar? Super Bowl Advent Calendar?

  25. No it’s a German thing I think.

Although other European countries may do it as well

  26. They’re very common in my hometown of St Louis because the city is both very Catholic and very German.

I haven’t noticed them as much here in San Francisco.
