I recently started studying topics to be able to join in on conversations, and so far they are music (I just listened to top 50 songs on spotify of each year and followed big name artists closely), celebrities (I followed gossip twitter accounts and subreddits etc), TV shows/movies (I watched new stuff coming out and some classic stuff), and news (local/federal/worldwide politics).

I guess this one falls under celebrities/entertainment but it was surprising (to me): people are really interested in British royalty. I was in a convo where people were listing out all kinds of itty bitty details about the royalty that they learned from pop culture that I have never heard of in my life, so this is going to be the next thing I study on.

Similar to like how British royalty is something people are interested in but I have never considered, what are some other things that people usually like to talk about?

  1. Themselves. You don’t need to be an expert (in fact, it’s weird if you are), but taking an interest goes a long way.

  2. People are into whatever you can make an interesting conversation out of. Just talk and things will continue naturally. The person you’re speaking to will help the conversation flow when you hit on a topic that interests them. You being passionate about it will usually help.

Any topic can make a good conversation, even if you don’t know a lot about it you can keep a good conversation as long as you take interest in what the person has to say and show it by asking the right questions that allow them to continue rambling. Just throw shit when talking and look for something that leads to an effortless conversation.

Like the most egregious example is when I brought up and spent hours talking about fucking apple cultivars and was hit up over text the day after to continue lol.

As for topics that usually capture attention well. World events, pop-culture things (for example, currently taylor swift rereleases), music, food, just asking the person about themselves, appropriate compliments.

  3. People love talking about themselves.
As the saying goes: b*tch, moan, and complain.

People like to vent out about things that are wrong, bad, and compliclicated in their lives.
    People seem to like drama.

  4. Like someone else said, just ask them questions about themselves and you’ll be fine

Ngl British royalty gossip sounds insufferable, music is fine but everyone is different and I know I don’t care about music or gossip or tv shows and don’t pretend to know about those things. I just keep up with current events and interesting/odd news stories “ie ocean gate, orcas sinking ships (both examples from June but you get the idea) I do recommend having a twitter or some form of social media where you keep up with memes and recent news stories, that can be helpful in social settings

Try wearing things that represent what you’re interested in. If you like crystals wear crystal jewelry, if you like marine life try a button shirt with a cool ocean animal print, if you like a certain anime, keep a keychain from that anime on your backpack idk

Literally met my best friend at a party cause we were both wearing moonstone rings and started talking about it

And lastly, probably the best thing you can do for strengthening social connections is come back to someone who mentioned their favorite thing and say that you looked it up cause you were curious.
