I picked the wrong major and never developed any real technical skill. I’m 30 and work a contract job making 19 an hour, changed industries, and getting my MBA.

Has anyone changed career paths or has not run into great fortune in your career but turned it around later on?

  1. Everyone has their own journey. I wouldn’t compare your career to those of others. It’s never too late to turn things around. Spend less time worrying and more time taking action. Start learning technical skills. Don’t get overwhelmed. You’ll probably find that 20% of the skills will be enough for 80% of the job. That’s enough to get you going. Combine that with some decent soft skills and you’ll be fine. If you move into management and leadership positions those hard skills become less important anyway.

  2. 41 and made a career change this year after being with my previous employer for 18 years. Money is a lot better, job satisfaction much better, hours are worse but if I can find people I trust to work under me that should be resolved in the next year or two.

My wife is the same age and made a career move from the health industry on the management side to fuels roughly 5 years ago (she has a bachelors in childhood development fwiw) and had a similar experience as I am currently having, her efforts actually were a big part of me confidently leaving a company I helped build. She is currently entertaining an opportunity in yet another industry.

Hard work pays off, you just have to find someone who recognizes it. Lesson I learned the hard way
