Hey everyone.

Later this week I’ll be flying to the UK for a job interview. Sounds fairly promising job wise, only going over to discuss finer details and see the workspace etc.

If anyone has gone through a similar situation, I’d love some feedback on some of my concerns.

I’ll be bringing my van (2002 VW Transporter t4 LWB 2.5tdi) over. I plan to use this as my everyday vehicle. It will have a CVRT, taxed and insured. I plan to add the UK to my insurance (if not already there) and look into insurance upon arrival – cancelling my Irish one once set up there (ASAP). I’m hopeful my Irish NCB might help me – do UK insurance companies take Irish NCB into consideration? When re registering the van in the UK, can I “hold” it’s current reg number if I plan to re register it in Ireland?

Do I need to apply or convert my driving licence? I currently hold a full car license and full motorbike licence.

I plan to bring the motorbike too. AFAIK in the UK I need to get a roadworthyness certificate for the bike. Do I need it to be on UK plates before carrying out the test?

Is it possible to get a “combination” policy on the van and bike? It’s a 98 Honda Shadow vt650

The bike will be transported on a trailer I’ve built myself. It’s a single axle trailer built on a 9k caddy rear beam, shocks and springs. How strict are trailer laws in the UK? Do trailers need to be certified? And do I need to have any extra category added to my licence there for driving with the trailer?

And lastly, any advice anyone is willing to give on other aspects of the move would be greatly welcomed.

Apologies for the crosspost between 2 subs. I was afraid id get confused between what I said in both of them…

Thank you all very much in advance 🙂

  1. I’m not sure about the car re-registering but my husband has never changed his Irish driving licence into a UK one.

Good luck and I hope the UK treats you well.
