im thinking of having sex for the first time with my boyfriend and i’d feel safer on birth control pills but I wanted to hear some other people’s experiences with the side effects of it.

i’m really busy with school right now and the last time I was on medication (lexapro) I reacted badly and had to stop taking it so i’m sort of scared to go on another medication. i’m also scared it’ll bring back my depression since I heard that can happen. so to whoever had taken birth control what were the side effects like?

  1. Birth control pills comes in many forms. Talk to your doctor to find one that works best for you. Your doctor can also advise on side effects specifically for each type of pill

  2. I know loads of people who have had just fine experiences with the pill, I unfortunately have not. (I use them to alleviate severe period pain, not for preventing pregnancy, so I can’t speak to the sexual side effects) I was on the kind where you get your period once a month for a out a month, those were great but the one time I missed a pill I felt very sick, and when my insurance suddenly stopped covering them I just had to stop and I was pretty sick for two days. I was spending the night in the bathroom bc I was so nauseous and dry heaving and near throwing up constantly and cramping so bad. Two months ago I started the 3 month kind, but was spotting every day so I switched to a stronger 3 month kind, but I’m still spotting. I’ve now been spotting every day for over two months, I’m hoping to switch back to the monthly kind and hopefully that will stop it. Obviously, it is different for everyone, I unfortunately have just had a bad experience. As for the mental side effects, I have anxiety and depression, (currently unmedicated bc nothing seems to help) but I didn’t notice those getting any better or worse.
