I’ll be going to London for summer school and all the googling I’ve done shows that it is impossible for me to rent a car in the UK (I’m 21). I read on a few sites that you can rent a motorcycle/moped/scooter with a car license, are there any that will rent to a young driver with an international license? I won’t be using it in London itself, only for short trips out into the countryside. Any recommendations would be helpful. Thanks!

  1. **For specific questions about London, you can also visit /r/London.**

  2. To ride a motorcycle at 125cc and below you’ll need to do a [CBT](https://www.gov.uk/motorcycle-cbt).

As for rental there’s loads because of the deliveroo crowd, although if you were to buy one and maintain it you could easily sell it for the same price.

There’s insurance to think about as well, so consider both of these points as renting may end up being cheaper.

It’s also a requirement by law that you wear a helmet that meets certain [safety standards](https://www.gov.uk/motorcycle-helmet-law). No requirement for any other gear, so feel free to wear as much or as little protective clothing as you like (hopefully the former, ATGATT!!). Earplugs are optional but recommended, don’t let a certain ex-member of /r/MotoUK read this!

I would recommend that you get a 125 because there’s some great places to ride out to within 2 hrs of London and as you’re here for the summer, why not? You’ll want the extra power afforded from a 125.

    Best of luck!

  3. You can, but pretty sure you need a CBT test aswell.

Its usually a one day course and cost around 100 pound. Its very easy, they basically just want to see if you can ride without being a danger. Over 90% pass first time.

Don’t know rental prices but might be worth considering buying one and selling when you go.

  4. Where you going to be staying? Sounds like a pain in the arse tbh. All that faff, buy gear / pay excess luggage, then contend with London roads to get out of town on a 125z

I used to live in central London and ride a 125, took it to Birmingham twice and the ride was amazing – down a roads through the country, but the first hour, to get out, was a right bollocks

  5. needing the licence will be the downside for a 125cc, you can do it but its £120 or around that price usually.

you might be able to get 50cc on a car licence but thats going to be slow and painful for the noise it makes.

depending on your needs and what you want to do, renting a folding electric bike could be ok, it will fit on any bus/taxi, they get to 18 mph and your options for where to ride it open up massivly since its technically a bike, not a motor vehicle
