Some women don’t get much pleasure from penetration. But if you’re uncomfortable, that may be taking away from the mood as well. As for your side note.. try angling the part outside your body downward so that the part inside rubs against the front of your body and g-spot if that makes sense?
If you haven’t tried yet….have your first orgasm be clitoral, then add the dildo after that. That would at least answer the question of whether some of the discomfort had to do with your level of arousal?

You will enjoy the real thing much more than a dildo. Intercourse is an acquired taste, it gets better as time goes on. Insist on foreplay and clit stim or oral to help you get the whole experience.
