First time home owner here who’s never had a gas boiler before (lived on a farm) and I don’t know who/how to get it serviced, it’s an ideal gas boiler so do I have to get it serviced by ideal or is it one of those things where you get a local boiler person to do it? It’s a newish one and the house used to be rented out which I believe means they have to keep it in good order so I’m not expecting there to be anything wrong with it if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance from a clueless 20 something

  1. Check to see if there’s a sticker on it, or under the flap. Engineers will often leave one to make sure they get the repeat business.

  2. Ask neighbours or friends to recommend a local plumber who is Gas Safe registered; you’ll pay more than you need to if you use an Ideal-recommended plumber. British Gas are very thorough but not the cheapest. I got ours by asking all the neighbours and it turns out the guy lives right up our road – very convenient. Or ask your local council, they usually have a list of local traders [all trades.]

I get my local plumber to do our boiler service and it’s good to have the number of a good plumber on hand, for anything like pipes bursting etc. This happened last winter, the boiler guy was happy to come out at short notice, and didn’t charge an emergency callout fee – because he was already our boiler service plumber.

  3. Local GasSafe person – look for a plumber & Heating Engineer but they need to be GasSafe registered.

If you know any of the neighbours, ask for a local recommendation.

  4. Thank you useful people! I went on checkatrade and sent a message to a bunch of local professionals, got 2 responses within an hour, never used it before so I didn’t know it was that easy! Thank you all for the help

  5. Use the Gas Safe register search to find someone in your area who does domestic boiler servicing. Ideal is pretty common, so many will be familiar with these boilers.

  6. I get Steve to do it. He’s properly registered, was recommended by a friend whose work I trust and he charges about £80 for a service. He installed the boiler and I noted his attention to detail so he is invited every 12 months to keep it running. We offer tea and biscuits because, when you find a decent tradesman, you cherish them.
