I’ve been looking at jobs, and came across a finance officer job in a local school. I know that obviously teaching staff have to take holidays outside of term time and was wondering is that the same for non-teaching roles? How easy to you find it to get time off for like appointments and the like?

  1. IME there is slightly more flexibility in terms of appointments (schools are pretty good at this these days as long as it’s not egregious) and such like but I’d be surprised if there was much more flexibility with regard to holidays, unless they were desperate to fill the role for whatever reason. Would just piss off the rest of the staff.

  2. Finance staff in my school get a normal leave allowance but it has to be taken in the school holidays, it’s like being in a normal job but worse

  3. I’ve worked in finance roles in two schools. The current one is meant to be no more than 7 days annual leave taken during term time for the whole year but my line manager turns a blind eye to that because a lot of us would probably consider leaving if they actually enforced it. Previous role didn’t have any rules on when you could take leave but it was a Multi Academy Trust so I wasn’t actually attached to one specific school. As a general rule of thumb I would say don’t expect to take long holidays during term time though.
