Idk if this is about to make sense but my little neurodivergent self noticed something yesterday, when I was completely awkward in a conversation to the point where I cringe thinking about it – I can only talk intelligently and for a great length of time if the conversation has a predetermined structure. Take classes, for example – you know what you’re going to discuss beforehand, so you can be ready to talk and carry on the conversation. And work meetings – they usually have a loose structure where announcements are made and each team member has a chance to speak and/or ask questions. So the issue with speaking in person for me is when someone talks to me I wasn’t expecting and there is no structure. Does anyone else have this?

  1. I think it’s easier to come up with a response when you know what the conversation is about and you are a bit more prepared. If it’s an unstructured conversation you don’t really know what the other person wants from you.
