Hi all! I got a letter from the DMV for a “Medical Driver Evaluation” because I apparently have a “lack of consciousness” and it’s a couple questions I have to ask my primary care provider and have the send the forms back to an address. My primary care provider said they don’t do any work for the dmv so they won’t take that evaluation for me. I don’t have any other primary provider that knows my info like that. Any ideas? I don’t know why I even got this letter in the first place, maybe I was sick a lot time ago and 1 symptom was I fainted? It is so random. On top of that, I applied for a total different drivel evaluation at an Urgent care (my provider said to go to an Urgent Care for it) and I payed $145 for the wrong thing. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

  1. Do you remember fainting? Did you have an accident that might make you think the BMV has need to require this?

If not, maybe just try clarifying with them.

  2. Quick story time! Around this time last year I went to my doctor with concerns about sleep issues. He carefully listened to me, asked some questions and immediately filed a form with the DMV to suspend my license. The first available hearing to get it back was 6 months away at 8am on a Monday, because DMV.

Look at your form very carefully. Check if your license is suspended or not, you do not want to be caught driving on a suspended license. This is very important.

The reason you got the form is because someone (doctor, police officer, family member, etc) sent the DMV a form saying they think you are unfit to drive because you may lose consciousness due to sleep issues, seizures, heart problems, drug dependency, etc. The list goes on.

The medical evaluation is to show that you do not have this problem. Your primary care doctor should be able to either do it, or point you to a specialist that can (like someone who specializes in sleep or heart medicine).

Bring the forms to your primary care in person, don’t ask over the phone. Bring all the forms you have. They should be able to at least point you in the right direction after reading them.

  3. Are you suffering from severe untreated sleep apnea?

Dude, if you are then it will eventually lead to you falling asleep at the wheel. Also, your primary can not treat that, you have to go to a special evaluation center.

Once you get the CPAP machine and show that you are using it, you should have no issue driving. But, all this takes a lot of time.

There are a lot of other very serious medical issues that come from not treating sleep apnea.

  4. I know this isnt what they mean, but I am imagining you going in and having to take the mirror test and turing test.
