How do you vet and choose a good therapist? Are there important questions to bring up during the screening process? What are some things you wish you knew prior to finding a therapist? Any other relevant information please leave in the comments. I’m looking to seek out a therapist for personal issues, to talk about work, my life currently, my relationship and general things that life throws at me. Also to help better control my anger emotions.

  1. If it’s available to you, many many employers offer an EAP program. You tell the person on the phone at the EAP I’m looking for a therapist to help with X. It’s all confidential. Through and EAP, you can get a few free sessions with a counselor / therapist, and if it’s not a match, ask to be placed with a different one. You should know in the first 10 minutes if this person seems to be relatable and interested in helping you improve.

  2. I think cognitive therapists or CBT are better, so I looked for those. But review the different types of therapists yourself. You can ask a prospective therapist what sort of questions you should ask.

  3. Usually you can go to your insurance providers website and they will have a list of doctors in network for various things. As far as the other questions, I’m not sure, sorry!

  4. It’s like dating. You’ll have to try a couple and see who you vibe with. Don’t be afraid to leave a therapist after 2 visits or after 2 years. You need someone who’s benefiting you
