Just watching old movies and I was wondering if there are night clubs where people wear tuxedos like in old movies? In NYC or anywhere?

  1. I’m sure there’s some out there but they’re niche and most people will never have heard of them.

  2. There have been attempts to bring back the old formal clubs at times, to my knowledge they have universally failed. Not even with necessarily requiring a tuxedo, just formal wear.

You will *occasionally* see a club have a specific black tie night, but it is outside of the normal.

Most people do not own a tuxedo, so you’d basically be opening a club for nobody.

  3. There are most definitely special events at clubs and halls, but on a general level it’s fairly uncommon. There are also some gimmicky themed type places, a throwback speak easy for example.

  4. Doubtful. Some expensive dinner clubs require a suit jacket, but not a tux.

Funny to watch black & white videos of baseball games from the 1930-1940 era, most of the men in the crowd are wearing suits and ties. Must have been really hot.

  5. I’ve heard of clubs with dress codes, like no sweats or sports jerseys but never that you must wear a full tux.

  6. There’s still some niche fancy cruise ships that have enforced formal dress codes, but outside of that I don’t know of any place that would regularly have dress codes like that nowadays.

  7. LOL… no. I doubt there are even ones that require a suit, a tie. Maybe some that suggest a sport coat even if that’s without tie. Some private clubs like Harvard Club (stodgy old boys social club, not a nightclub) might require jackets in main parts of facilities.

  8. Dress has become more casual in America over the past 20 years. Most Americans will only wear a tuxedo to their high school prom and their wedding. And it seems the only people who regularly wear a suit and tie are lawyers and funeral directors.

People still wear tuxes outside of the two scenarios I mentioned, but these are almost always private events that are invitation or membership-only. I’ve never seen a venue open to the public that required a tux.

  9. Night clubs? None that I can think of. Formal wear of varying levels will be a thing for galas. But those are all designed as special events, and I can’t think of a place you need to wear better than a sport jacket to enter.

(And in America, asking for the sport jacket is already a bit much.)

  10. No. Most people only ever wear a tux when they get married (and possibly senior prom in high school) and they rent it because it’s not worth buying something you’ll never wear.

  11. I think 21 was probably one of the last but they closed during the pandemic. Cafe society has died out, unfortunately.
