We just moved in today! The neighbors seem nice, but the only issue is that they have a motion activated device that plays a christmas carol. It’s slightly annoying, but something I could live with… if it wasn’t going off almost 10 times an hour. (Without exaggeration. We were there for 4 hours and it went off over 30 times.)

They have it attached to a windchime, so every time it gets windy it will play multiple times in a row.

We’re in a duplex, so it’s RIGHT outside our door. We can hear it through the entire house. In short, it’s extremely annoying and I’m trying to figure out a polite way to ask them to move it. I don’t want them to get rid of it completely, but would it be acceptable to do something like this:

“Hello! We’re new, happy to be your neighbors! I just have a question–I love the carol that goes off, but could you please move it closer to your door? The way that it is, it goes off often due to the wind and I’m afraid it’s a bit much for us. You can definitely still keep it, but if you could please change where it’s located it would mean a lot to us.”

Basically: greeting > request > explanation of issue > reassurance that we don’t have a problem with them or the thing itself > thank you

If all else fails we could contact the property manager but I’d rather talk to them first and not have that be our first interaction since I feel like that would set a bad tone.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Find out what kind of batteries it uses and swap out dead ones, same brand, for what they have.
