I was going to use the culture tag, but that felt very inappropriate.

My boyfriend is half American, his British mum still lives in California with her partner, who is American. We’re planning on going over in the summer and I asked if we can try and persuade him that ‘dogging’ means taking your dog for a walk, so when he visits, he uses the term in that way. He’s good craic. He’d find it funny.

My boyfriend said he thinks it’s used over there too.

So do you know the term? If so, is it widespread?

Edit: I’ve found the dogging scene from Peter Kay’s Car Share. Love to know people’s reactions: https://youtu.be/5u4hAxi5b6o?si=tn-LgGPBt57Farc4

  1. Some of us will know what it means, some of us won’t, its not as common or widespread a term over here.

  2. Yes, also I can only imagine what it ‘s like to hear an American say they’re “bummed” about something.

  3. “Dogging” had a very different meaning here, though it’s a bit dated.

If folks know what it is, at least vaguely, it’ll be from. British media.

  4. it’s not really a term people use here but with the rise of internet pornography your friend might still know what it means

  5. You want to teach your boyfriend’s mom’s American partner a British slang word by telling him it means something it doesn’t actually mean so when he comes to visit the UK he will use it incorrectly?

    Am I understanding you correctly?

  6. I didn’t know what dogging meant before reading this thread, but I would have guessed it was a sexual term and googled it before saying it to anyone.

I’ve also gotta ask, what’s “he’s good craic” mean?

  7. Dogging, like other fetishes, is known in the US. and like any fetish has a category on the adult web. while not a common term and not used, or done frequently. Adult store meetups/ glory holes are more common. The major reason for this is legal repercussions. In the UK public sex isn’t illegal, and while there are several charges that can be made, none come with more than fines, some heavy. Public sex, Especially as dogging entails, is illegal here (in most jurisdictions) and can have penalties including prison time and registry as a sex offender. Being on the Registry will limit the employment you can have, where you can live and even visitation of children and grandchildren. In California, the **minimum** time on the registry is 10 years. This can really kill the excitement of a public romp.

I do want to put this bird in your ear, What if you try this and he A) already knows the term and B) is active in it? What do you think your boyfriend feels for the rest of his trip or life for that matter? Some doors shouldn’t be opened, even in jest. But you do you.

  8. I only know because of British media.

I’m sure it happens here, but not often enough that we have a word for it.

  9. I’m confused at this question. It just kind of sounds like you’re being mean to a guy for no reason.

The only way I’ve heard ‘dogging’ used is the same as peacocking – you’re showing off. A

  10. In the US “dogging somebody” or “being dogged” usually refers to something of an irritating or harassing nature which follows one around regardless of their attempt to get away from it. ie “The mafia boss was dogged by police for years” or “Despite its best efforts, the company was dogged by lack of profit.”

  11. I know the term in its UK usage but I don’t think many Americans would. I’d imagine that they take it to mean “pestering” or “bothering”.

  12. I know what it means but I doubt my wife would recognize the term. I think it would be hit or miss as to whether someone here would know what it means. I think I kind of misunderstood the term as well based on that video. I was under the impression it was having sex with strangers, such as at a park. The video indicates it’s having sex in front of strangers.

  13. I know what dogging is, but only thanks to r/AskUK. I once asked “We Americans have been reading and seeing depictions of it for centuries, but what is the English Countryside *really* like?” About 1 out of 5 answers mentioned dogging.

People do that in the US too, but in the UK it’s somehow more… organized? Like, there’s more of a subculture attached to the practice? To the point that it’s been given a specific name?

Whatever we call it, it definitely ain’t that!

  14. I saw it used in an episode of the grand tour where Jeremy Clarkson comes across a couple having sex in a car in some dense fog. Lol.

They didn’t show anything of course, but it was pretty obvious what they have been doing. Search for them they chose the wrong parking spot and ended up with Jeremy Clarkson and a camera crew observing.
