This is the most middle class question I’ve ever had to ask.

I’ve had a cleaner come once a fortnight for about 4 months for £50. It’s two lasses, they just do a basic clean but they’re great and I really appreciate them. Do I give her a tip at Christmas? If so, how much. A tenner each?

Edit: I wasn’t very clear, I’m sorry. I know I can tip someone if I want to, I more mean is it appropriate to? And for those of you that have cleaners and tip them, what’s the going rate?

  1. Here’s a universal full proof algorithm for you that covers **ALL** potential tipping situations in the UK…

    > If you want to leave a tip, then do so. If you don’t want to leave a tip, then don’t.

It’s literally that simple. There is no requirement to leave a tip but if you want to, then that’s fine too.

  2. I think it would be appreciated by them yeah.

Make sure you don’t make a huge fuss about it though as chances are their company policy wouldn’t strictly allow them to accept tips.

  3. I’m sure a tenner each would be appreciated. It’s not over-generous and it’s not mean.

  4. Some tip in cash for each of them would be great. Tenner sounds fine.

Our cleaner gets double pay for the last clean before Christmas, and a bottle of wine. But we’ve had her nearly 15 years, she brings presents for the kids, she knows our house inside out, and she’s fab.

  5. Ours refuses to take tips not matter what reason. So we buy her a bottle of wine and some chocolates at Xmas.

  6. At work a 3% Christmas bonus quite typical.

    6 month x 2 times a month x £50 x 3% = £18.

A tenner each seems fair enough.

  7. Our cleaner gets souvenirs when we go places and come back, and Christmas presents/bonus (usually we pay her the same as if she was cleaning, but don’t have her actually come round between Christmas and New Year). Mind you, she loves our cats, and finding a good cleaner is difficult, so we think that’s quite OK and we’re happy to give her a Christmas bonus.

  8. Write them a Christmas card each and chuck a tenner in. Your festive duty is then completed ✔️

  9. Yes I think it’s generally done to give your cleaner a little extra at Christmas. Give them an extra 50%, so £25. And never apologise for being middle class. Back bone of the nation don’t you know?
