Go for it or play the long game?

I’ve been talking with a classmate. We’ve gotten coffee once and hung for a bit after class. Our text conversations are interesting and engaging but when we hung out today after class I shot my shot and asked to take her out and she seemed dismissive. But she’s showed interest in other ways or maybe she’s just being friendly. She’s very reserved and cautious of people and seemed reluctant to answer. Basically I’m wondering if I should carry on our casual conversations over text or go ahead and ask her again if she’s interested or wanting to hangout. I wonder if I can build more interest if I continue to just talk about whatever. If I ask to hangout and she says no it could all end or make it awkward. I also don’t want to “waste time.” I know it can take time to interest a girl and my last girlfriend definitely didn’t like me at first but fell in love over a period of “persistence.” Maybe I can ask for a casual hangout but I really prefer spending time in person over texting. It’s fun to text her but I already asked her as she was leaving to go out and didn’t really get an answer. It’s really hard to tell where her head is at.
