In Hungary, it is taboo, but not fully: Horses are considered the noblest animals, even more “man’s best friend” and human-like than dogs. Back in pre-industrial times, being a *Csikós* (person who took care of the horses on the open range) was considered the highest-ranking of those occupations who took care of animals, while being a *Kondás* (swineherd) was considered the lowest because of pigs’ dirty nature.

Horse butchers were around during the World Wars and under Stalinism in the 1950s when meat was scarce, but in present-day Hungary you won’t find butcher shops which sell horse steaks or other large pieces of horse meat, and slaughterhouses are limited to only slaughtering a few horses per year. Thus the only horse products you will usually find in the country are horse sausages and horse *párizsi* (a bologna-like sausage).
