So, In the UK most mobile (cell) phone numbers look something like this:

079XXXXXXXX

11 digits, starting with a zero. And normally when I am calling internationally I just replace the “0” with “+44” and the rest of the number is the same. So it would be:

+4479XXXXXXXX

But most of the time when I need to give my number to someone in the states, they get confused by this. They are asking for the “area code” or the “international code” or they really just don’t know what to do with the “+”?

So my question is: how do I explain my international phone number to an American in a way that they will understand ? Or is it just the case that they aren’t used to seeing international numbers and will just be confused regardless?
