Due to a snafu in the hiring/leaving process i have inadvertently agreed to start work at a new company on the 17th and my leaving date at my current place is the 19th. Would you, the brave, smart brits or Reddit, suggest A. Politely asking my new job for a 2 day later start date, or, B. Simply not turn up at your existing job for the last 2 days?

Edit: i asked the new place if i could start later and the could not have been more lovely about it. Even more excited to start with such a nice company now. win win all round

  1. Ask your current job to leave early

If not, ask new job to start later

If not, call in sick for last two days of old job. You can get 3 days sick leave before needing a doctors note

  2. I mean sounds like your current employer is a dick, so if you’re certain you won’t be coming back just don’t show up for the last 3 days. On the other hand, your new work shouldn’t have too many issues pushing your start date back a bit (it’s not months or anything) if they’ve been waiting this long. If you do ask them, do it asap though and just explain unfortunately your soon to be ex-employer made a mistake and out of obligation you would prefer to finish your term with them amicably (lay on thick how you’re trying to accommodate them despite their mistake out of the goodness of your own heart) and see what they say. If they insist you have to start on the date specified then you know you’ll need to call in sick 🤷‍♀️ or they’ll agree so problem solved.

  3. After reading your posts and replies personally I would start at the new job on the current agreed date and sod the old place.

  4. Call up the new job, apoligise and ask to start late. Make it sound like the old job really really need you and can’t do without your help for 2 days.
