My husband has a good family and he is close to them but he has never been a gift-giver of his own volition. My husband’s family never received so much as a Christmas card from him until we were married. He calls them on birthdays and holidays but cards and gifting are not something he would bother with unless I handled it all. Even now cards come because I get them, literally put them in front of him with a pen to write, then address and mail it myself. I shop and wrap Christmas gifts for his family members. (I myself am not from a Westo-Christian family and my own family doesn’t even celebrate Christmas!)

I know this isn’t unusual, but why?

I can tell that my stepMIL handles all the gifting in her relationship while my FIL doesn’t seem to have a clue and the same also applies to my own father. This year my dad was on holiday with my uncle over my birthday and he didn’t text me a birthday wish till a week later when he returned – clearly my mum wasn’t around to have reminded him of special occasions.
