How bad of an idea is tattooing makeup so that it won’t smear off?

  1. Depends on how old you are and who you plan on getting it done by.

So long as you’re a legal adult and getting it done by a professional, there’s no issue.

  2. There are places that do permanent makeup tattoos. Although it’s a bit of a misnomer, because the skin on the face is thin and grows very quick. A lot of tattoo makeup only lasts a few months before it fades.

  3. Getting my eyebrows tattooed years back was a mistake and waste of money. It didn’t last very long to justify the cost, and the leftover faded marks look weird. I’ve been better off living with thin brows and penciling them in every day, because at this point I can make them look pretty natural and can slap them on in about three minutes.

Maybe other women have better luck with this, maybe it was just the person who did them doing a poor job. They looked great at first after they healed up. They just didn’t hold up and the touch-ups after the fact didn’t make a difference.

EDIT: Also, the cost of buying the brow pencils vs the cost of the tattooing isn’t substantial enough to matter. The pencil I use costs about $3 and it’s literally the only makeup I use.

  4. My friend got her eyebrows and eyeliner done years ago. It looks amazing and hasn’t faded at all.

  5. Even if done well, the way the ink fades depends a lot on your skin type and you might not like the way it looks a few years later. The lines can bleed and look fuzzy or the ink can fade green/blue or orange. I personally wouldn’t risk it.

  6. Be aware that makeup trends change. They don’t always change super fast, but they’ll change multiple times, and probably fairly drastically, in a woman’s adult life. I know makeup tattooing was popular in the…..70s or 80s? And in the late 90s and 2000s, old women with outdated makeup stuck on their faces was kind of a big cultural joke.

On the other hand, it sounds like nowadays some tattoo artists can make it more “semipermanent” than permanent. But that sounds more expensive than just wearing makeup. If you’ve got the money and think it will last a few years rather than forever….

  7. My brows are micro bladed and I love them. I had it done back in 2019. All she did was fill in my natural shape. Most people can’t tell that they’re done unless I tell them that they are.

But you get what you pay for. She wasn’t cheap, and I go back for color boosts every so often.

  8. I’ve seen some people that got really good work done with permanent makeup. I do wonder what happens with age and fading. I wouldn’t get it, but I think if someone wants to do it, why not? It’s their face.

  9. Makeup trends always change!

Ask women who have dark lip liner and think black eye liner tattooed on.
