Europe has its fair share of immigrants from the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and other parts of Europe.

My mum, for example, is a Londoner born to Turkish Cypriot immigrants. She grew up speaking Turkish at home, but I’ve noticed she struggles to translate complex ideas and often substitutes English words. I think a native Turk could easily identify her as a *heritage* speaker rather than a native speaker.

Even though she has an ethnic name, Mum told me she didn’t feel like an “other” growing up in London because there were lots of “ethnic” kids in her primary school (mostly Jamaicans.)

She also mentioned that while she grew up enjoying Turkish cuisine like cacık and köfte, she also rejected some of the old country traditions like having an arranged marriage (like her parents did.)
