I just moved into a student house in January. Everyone on my floor moved in before me last year in September, so they already got pretty close with one another while I’m the only one new here. I tried to introduce myself to them and make small talks now and then, but it still feels pretty awkward.
It seems like people are reserved towards me (understandable) which is an issue because I’m pretty shy and don’t get out of my way to make friends a lot. Everytime I’m in the common area people talk to each other, but many times the conversation involves a lot of inside jokes and it seems to get more awkward everytime I try joining in.
How do you get close to people in this situation? I want to feel belonged here and to make friends with them, but it feels so hard being the only one new in the group.
