My fianceé and I are getting married in April. We live in Florida, and as such we aren’t required to have any witnesses sign our marriage license. We’re having a very small ceremony, just us and the officiant, and we’re wondering about the witness thing. Online it says that while witnesses aren’t required, they are recommended in the event you have to provide proof of your marriage. My question is, what scenarios exist where the legal document is not sufficient, and we actually need witnesses? I’m struggling to find situations like that online. For instance, when I fill out my open enrollment for health insurance and I notify them that I am now married and would like my wife on my insurance, would that require witnesses? I fail to see how the legally binding notarized document is not enough. Thank you!
