In America when someone says thanks/thank you most of the time you wouldn’t actually say you’re welcome and instead you just say mhmm, yeah, or yup. It can actually be seen as a bit rude and overly formal/cold to say you’re welcome sometimes, especially if the thing you did for the other person was really small and barely takes 5 seconds or you’re in an informal environment. It’s seen as you making a bigger deal out of it than it was. Even for larger things that you have to actively go out of your way to do we usually say no problem instead of you’re welcome even though it would be fine in that situation.

I saw a video of a Scot in America who claimed everyone in America was rude because someone didn’t say you’re welcome to her. I didn’t really ever think about this being a kind of cultural/linguistic difference between America and Europe until I saw that video and now I’m curious if it’s All of Europe or just the UK.
