I’m doing some history reading (late at night, of course) and call it cultural amnesia, but I find myself surprised every time I see that Spain’s transition from totalitarianism to democracy was tremendously recent– completed in 1982, within living memory for a lot of people. And I’m really surprised to learn that Franco, before he died, named King Juan Carlos I as his successor who transitioned Spain to a complete representative democracy.

I am curious what you as Europeans think of Franco, if anything at all. What is his legacy like there?
