It’s something I’ve always wondered since my girlfriend and I plan on heading over to Europe in about a year and change. Here in the states it’s a regional thing and I got weird looks in Chicago when I called waitresses that were the same age as me ma’am since it’s a respect thing and a force of habit. I already know I’m gonna get pegged as American just cause most of what I wear are boots, jeans, and button shirts lol. I just don’t wanna step on toes when I’m actually just trying to be respectful
