What is with the front porch?

I watch lots of tv shows where American people house hunt. SO many of them want a front porch to sit and relax on.
My question…. How many of you actually sit and relax on your front porch? And why do you want people all looking at you when they walk/drive past?
As an Aussie I don’t get it.
