So, first things first: i’d LOVE to drive my car over with all my stuff that i would declare as Transfer of Residence (i think that’s the procedure, still have a lot to read). I would drive it right back out in a week, since i have a buyer for it here.

However, that’s not legal – since i intend to live in the UK permanently, i would not be allowed to drive the car that i’ve owned for years, unless i want to import it as well. Yeah, that’s right: if i visited without intending to live in the UK permanently, i could drive that same car for up to 12 months, with no issues. Amazing.

The stuff i’m talking about is mostly electronics: PC, two 32″ monitors, bookshelf speakers and amplifier, electric guitar and amp etc. These are, needless to say, fragile. Plus two 200L bags of clothes and motorcycle gear & helmet (less fragile). Ideally, also two full tool boxes.

One thing i’ve read is that one must accompany their declared stuff, which is not possible if i send it via one of the transport companies (and i’ll be honest, i wouldn’t trust them with anything fragile anyway). Is that true?

Are there any other options i’m not thinking of? Please keep in mind that budget is limited as well, renting a van would be expensive..

I would sell everything, but besides the hassle (i hate haggling), it would also mean quite the expense to replace them in the UK, especially since i already have to purchase a lot of furniture and other stuff, every place to rent seems to be unfurnished..
