It’s been drawn to my attention that when I’m criticised or disagreed with I will tend to only skim the comment in question or otherwise shut it out, so I end up not actually addressing the person’s points. I know the habit arose because I find being criticised painful and humiliating, however kindly it’s meant, so I learned to minimise my exposure to such content. Of course this just results in me misunderstanding or leaving out important parts, so it makes things worse. I hadn’t quite realised I was doing it until it was brought to my attention this week. I know the only actual solution is to read the full thing when criticised but my fear of emotional pain is getting in the way of that. Is there a way to make it easier?
