I recently moved to a new place. My neighbors invited me for a graduation party for their daughter. The issue is that this is a very republican area, and people here don’t approve of mask wearing (the neighbors themselves commented something like that to me). I have a 1-year-old son (not yet eligible for covid vaccine) and feel uncomfortable not wearing a respirator to a larger social gathering. The neighbors are otherwise very nice people and I would like to be friends with them, but I am not sure what my socially acceptable options are. Any experience dealing with this? Do I have to decline going because otherwise things would get very weird if I come with a mask (and I’m not sure if it is expected that there would be food to be eaten)? If I do it, will it make it much harder to form relationships later? Should I come with a mask, perhaps drop some baked items, and leave? I really don’t know.
