As an American this is confusing to me. Typically I’m used to having host seating me and a waiter checking up on me regularly without any action from me end but that doesn’t seem to be the case in Europe. I don’t want to be rude but am curious what the restaurant etiquette is from start to finish of a meal.

1. Do you always seat yourself?
2. If I want the check is it okay to raise my hand or call over the waiter down or is that rude? If I’m in a hurry how do I do this more quickly?
3. Is it weird to order an espresso with my meal? Or should I wait after?
4. If I want to just drink, what is the most effective way to get drinks soon after another? It seems like everything requires a wait

Maybe I’m an ignorant American but just a few things that have stuck out to me
