Sadly mask wearing while exhibiting symptoms of a cold has disappeared since covid days here in Ireland. It’s rare to see anybody with a mask on, and common for people to announce casually they have a cold while talking to you at close range. People wearing masks are automatically ‘the odd ones out’. This happened to me yesterday at a party. My unmasked friend had a cold. I wanted to put on my mask, but didn’t want to embarrass her. She was already self conscious because a man she liked was lurking in the background. This morning I woke up with a cold, maybe hers. I’m annoyed with myself for not being brave and masking up, but on the other hand, she would have probably been awkward about me wearing a mask around her and I didn’t have the social skills to interpret my mask wearing to her while handling her potential embarrassment. Does anybody have any advice? Sometimes I wish I lived in an Asian country where mask wearing while infectious is normalised.
