So my mom said that as customary, the guy should be giving some cai li but proceed to not advise how much she is expecting.

I am 29 years old and have never really understood this part about my Chinese heritage (I dont see why it is important for the guys to do this when marriage in the modern world is already so expensive and both parties are contributing to the expenses equally) and this isn’t part of his culture at all.

How to I broach this subject with him as well? Feels weird to just “hey, ma mom asked for money to marry me, it’s a tradition thing” and it is possible to take it as an expense between the two of us.
