I (33f) and my husband (33m) don’t seem to define respect the same way so I am hoping to get a male perspective that might help me better understand him. I tend to think of “respect” and “civility” as interchangeable, so treating someone with respect is being polite and considerate of their feelings. My husband’s definition is different and I really don’t get it. The best I can do to explain it is that it is closer to “deference” so being respectful to him seems to be accepting/trusting his judgement without pushback/questioning and being careful not to contradict or interject in conversation and I am wondering if this is a gender difference thing and hoping to learn more to help me understand.
