what does vagina taste like?

I went down on my new gf for the first time a week ago and it tasted bad, this was my first time eating out a girl so i have nothing else to compare it to but i know vaginas aren’t supposed to taste like candy or something but it was very salty and sour? it was to the point where i couldn’t continue i didn’t want to embarrass her so i kept going for a bit and then tried to smoothly transition into something else but it was almost unbearable. is it a taste that i just have to get used to or could this be a hygiene problem or a conversation i could have with her? because i don’t think i can go down on her without gagging if that’s what it tastes like
