I'm from upstate New York and my family is mostly from the North Country & New England. as far as I know, we all use a butter dish to keep a stick of butter spreadable. I've heard that most Americans don't do this, so I'm wondering if it's possibly a regional thing.

  2. I do use a butter dish (native Californian, family from Kentucky) but I do not keep it out of the refrigerator except in late Fall/early Winter. It’s too damn hot where I live, and I don’t leave the A/C on when I’m not home because *that’s* too damn expensive!

  3. We use one that we keep out on the counter. I’m from North Carolina, fiance is from Texas.

  4. Yes, I use a butter dish. I am from the South. If you heard most Americans don’t use butter dishes, you heard wrong. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t.

  5. My grandmother and father both used them. In high school I would look at the thrift stores for “pretty” butter dishes to give to my gradmother (she loved them).

    Personally I do not use one. I will put the butter on a small plate or bowl if I need it to get soft for something. Just never thought about getting one I guess.

  6. I did it growing up but my wife and mother-in-law think it’s weird and disgusting so there’s no easily spreadable room temperature butter for me.

  7. No we just used spreadable butter. Apparently other places call this “tub butter” and it’s seen as ritzy? Was always normal to me.

  8. I don’t. I don’t use enough butter in my day to day life to necessitate a butter dish. I currently have a tub of margarine in my fridge that has been there so long I don’t remember when I bought it.

  9. Growing up in Texas, we used liquid butter squirt type and then country crock tubs. When I moved to PA and then Delaware, I’ve only had actual sticks of butter and for that I’ve used a butter dish (or plate).

  10. I’ve always used a butter dish. I’m from Florida. My wife and I make clarified butter and leave it out, but still have the butter dish out. Whoever wakes up first will take the butter out of the fridge.

  11. We have 2 glass crystal covered butter dishes that we keep by the toaster, one at a time. After one stick(or half stick) is gone it gets washed and the clean one is put to use. It’s recommended that you only leave out salted butter; unsalted should be refrigerated

  13. Yes. I’m from California and live in the Midwest. We always had a butter dish when I was growing up.

  14. I tried using a butter dish sealed by water and could never get it to work right. Plus we don’t really use butter enough (aside from cooking) to bother. Now I buy a small tub of Kerry Gold spreadable butter about once a month & it stays in the fridge.

    I keep my butter out on the counter. It’s a plain Rubbermaid one, with a snap-on lid.

  17. I don’t, I simply don’t use butter often enough to bother with it. I don’t have any butter in my house unless I’m making Christmas cookies. My parents had a butter bell, they were both morbidly obese.

    (Please note I’m not trying to say people shouldn’t eat butter, its just if I eat butter regularly I’d be 300 pounds because morbid obesity runs in my family on both sides)

  18. I had never even heard of them until maybe ten years ago. Still never seen one in use. I’ve lived in western NY and Ohio.

    In the 80s and 90s my parents bought Country Crock, but once I discovered real butter there was no going back!

  20. California, and pretty much all of my family (all Californians as well, born/raised) use butter dishes as well. During super hot months they’ll (the family in northern CA*) pop em in the fridge but I keep mine on the counter.
