What are some subtle signs that someone can handle themselves in a fight?

My son talks about all the fights at school (not him, he's a good lad) and I always tell him that it's the ones who don't back down from a fight but remain composed until it starts, they are the ones that know what they're doing.
Usually the loudest person is the most scared.
