People who have participated in a clinical trial, what was it like? and what happened?

I am wondering what these clinical trials are like. I met someoone at work who said their trial was basically a holiday and they just slept and played games for two weeks and suffered no known side affects. I've always wondered about these, not that I am planning to participate, I am just very intrigued. It seems extremely risky and scary.
