There are a lot of great vintage stores in California.
But for my tastes there’s very little.
IT really depends on what you are looking for. Its highly regional in the demands and donations.
Not an expert by any means, but if I was looking for stuff elderly people would own I would look in states or cities with a larger than average elderly population

As a avid vintage thriftier, sadly, these kind of things have become harder and harder to find due to resellers
Likely, your best bet will be in bigger cities with a larger verity of shops. Although, they will also likely have higher prices
Or, keep a close eye on Facebook market place and eBay and try to snatch a deal before someone else dose
The more rural you get, the better the antique stores. My favorite is in Tenino, Washington
