I was talking to my parents recently, and I used the phrase “bog standard” with them. They were both surprised and neither of them had ever heard the phrase before. They’re both highly educated, and my dad has a ton of British relatives, but neither of them had ever heard it before. I’m sure that I’ve been aware of and used the phrase for two decades, so where could I have picked up a Britishism from that my own parents had never heard before?

My fellow Americans, have you heard the phrase “bog standard” before, and if so, where did you pick it up from?
