With the cultural prevalence of English in Europe, it seems to an uneducated outsider that there is a possibility of some local languages beginning to be replaced by English in an increasingly globalized world. In Norway, approximately 90% are fluent English speakers, with similar levels in Sweden, the Netherlands, and Iceland. Living in Europe, I have personally met maybe 15 people who didn’t speak any English at all, typically in places like Sicily or Eastern Europe. With the majority of the internet being English and with English increasingly taking over as the international language of the world, do you think it’s possible that some local languages are eventually entirely replaced by English in the next century or two?
