Did you (or someone you know) face discrimination because of a pregnancy? When? What happened?

  1. The opposite experience for me actually. I’ve actually known several woman that were offered a position when they were very pregnant. This happened a lot when I was working for a particularly nice City in California. Maybe they were more progressive? Or maybe that’s the norm. They did have many female Department Heads, actually.

Those pregnant women were all incredibly charming and intelligent. They deserved those job offers. The City made a good choice by hiring them.

  2. At a job interview the company asked if I had kids and if I was planning on getting pregnant in the upcoming two years. That was oddly specific. But I answered: “I have no such plans, but what happens, happens”.

I got hired and it is a great place to work btw. They realized they shouldn’t have asked but revealed that because I was honest and upfront, they liked my personality a lot, thinking they needed that way of communication in the position they were hiring for.

They never admitted to not having hired me if I had answered yes, but I know that would have been a real possibility, so I kept my answer honest but in the middle.

  3. Yes, a previous ex coworker of mine had some grievances from my ex boss due to her pregnancy. She requested to work less and be on her feet less, well, he ended up giving her more hours and refused her request to be seated as much as she could. We were just tech support so there was no reason why she couldn’t sit down more often. I also believe that he maliciously increased her hours. He also called her ‘one of those’ and had a negative reaction to her announcing her pregnancy. My ex boss was genuinely great to me so his behavior towards her was shocking.

  4. Yes. My job gave me reasonable accommodations the first pregnancy, but the second time they refused. They still wanted me to lift very heavy things (items that could be up to 200lbs)

  5. One of the teachers at my school who taught PDHPE( health) to high school students got reassigned as the primary school health teacher when she started showing her pregnancy, we asked her about it and while she was very professional she basically admitted it wasnt her decision. Her replacement was the old primary school health teacher, they swapped.
