I recently purchased some things from Japan which i'm excitedly waiting for but i realized I have no idea how the UK taxes goods from abroad. The few times i've gotten things sent from my family in the US they've charged me over 50 quid for trinkets and letters!

I bought some tea which came to just under £38, so i'm hoping they don't over charge me. How do they know what to charge? Do they open the package? Do i have to declare the total cost somewhere?

Thanks
