How does election canvassing work in the US, particularly the rural parts?

Inspired by spending yesterday afternoon doing some canvassing for a British political party in a large edge-of-town housing development that's rather poorly served by the bus service. This must be even more of a ball-ache on some of the American suburbs I've seen on a few other subreddits, so how do you work around the logistics issues?
