Interstate bus transfer- how much time do I need to leave in between busses?

It's my 1st time taking a bus. I'm looking at the bus tickets, and it has only a 35 minutes transfer time, to a different bus company, but at the same bus station. There's another bus transfer time of 45 minutes with the same company. I am assuming the bus might be late, stuck in traffic and more?
