Did USA ever had era of mechanical transmission in passanger cars ?

As I know, nearly most of personal cars in USA have automatic gearbox.
In mid-XX century, after personal cars stopped being something rare and mass-automobilization began in USA, was there period of mechanical gearboxes ? If it was, when mass transition to automatic transmissions began ?
