Australian here. We see a lot of photos of the streets with homeless camps, tents and drug addicts passed out everywhere which is very sad.

On these streets, I assume there are doorways to people's homes, shops, commercial property etc. What has been the knock-on effect from this as I assume its incredibly hard to rent out apartments with this happening downstairs, and surely businesses are packing up and moving elsewhere too?

Edit: wow I've really had my eyes opened to how much worse homelessness is in Oz at the moment.
We get given a very different view over here so thanks everyone for taking the time to share this knowledge.
